If Chandni Chowk was psychedelic, Agra was the Rolling Stones concert at Altamont. Agra has three of the great stars of the Mughal empire, Akbar's Tomb, the Red Fort, and the Taj Mahal, set amidst an aggressive and dirtier than necessary bustling little town of about 1.5 million. Like everywhere, the traffic is chaotic, but since it is a little smaller than other places, there are a lot more cows milling around in the middle of traffic. There are pigs rifling through piles of garbage, stray dogs, camels (with handlers), donkey carts, and white horses which are used for weddings, when they aren't pulling freight carts. I say it is like Altamont, because we saw a poor tuk-tuk (motorized rickshaw) driver get pounded by two big guys after he accidentally bumped into their motorcycle. They jumped off the bike and while one dragged him down the busy street, the other one pounded his face. It was disturbing.
I had a lot more text but I accidentally closed blogger without saving it so lost it and I'm too sleepy to redo all of it, so I'll just upload some pictures. Akbar's Tomb first.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad you are enjoying it. You haven't seen anything yet. Agra was a bit raw. I'm following with the Taj now. Thanks for following and commenting.
