The Red Fort in Old Delhi is another remnant of Shah Jahan's reign in the early 1700's. It was his fortified residency and remained the seat of the Mughal government until they were defeated by the British in 1857. The red sandstone walls are 100 feet high on the city side and surround a complex of buildings which included gigantic halls for public audiences, one for private audiences, a mosque, the royal residency, a partial harem (the rest of them lived in a haveli in what is now Chandni Chowk. There are engineered canals connecting buildings, feeding fountains, and irrigating gardens. It's too big and overwhelming to describe the intricacies of the of the detail in the sculpted sandstone and granite, so I'll post some photos. There are some grey, brick and mortar building which were built by the British, sometime around the turn of the 20th century.
